The top of Mt. Kilimanjaro

The top of Mt. Kilimanjaro

My name is Veronica May and my life at the moment is a little less ordinary. I work offshore on a boat! A big one. My rotation is 5 weeks on, 5 weeks off, so for half the year I spend my time traveling. My aim is to continue exploring a new part of the world, and never go back to the same place.

For most people, the questions, “Where are you from?” or “Where do you live?” doesn’t usually leave them blank-faced looking like a rabbit caught in headlights. This happens to me, and I get this question a lot. You see I’m not your average girl. I’ve lived in 5 different countries and moved homes 8 times. I’m mixed race and have 3 different nationalities. Talk about identity crisis! So my job doesn’t exactly help me find a place to call home.

But I would never dream of anything different. Exploring the world, learning about new cultures, trying different cuisines and meeting new people makes me happy.

So far I’ve climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mt. Kinibalu in Borneo and the Himalayas, dived the Great Barrier Reef, skydived over it, dived with manta rays in Indonesia, kayaked with Orca whales through Vancouver Islands, got lost in the city life of New York & London, swam with reeftip sharks in Oman, bathed in the natural hot pools of Iceland, bunjy-jumped in New Zealand, rode elephants in Thailand, partied like there was no tomorrow in Miami…the list goes on and I can’t wait to start planning my next adventure!

I’d love to share my journey with you and hope to inspire you in any way I can. It always means a lot to hear your thoughts and travel suggestions too!

  1. Hi Veronica,

thanks for stopping by my site earlier. I chuckled when I read your line about the rabbit in the headlights comment. I feel the same much of the time. What an exciting job you must have – looking forward to following your adventures!

    • Awesome! It is 2 days/1 night of hiking to the top, and you need to have a guide with you. I stayed at Mountain Torq for the night. You wake up around 4am to hike to the top, and then I did the world’s highest via ferrata with them on the way back down – it’s amazing, mindblowing views! In Sabah make sure you go see the orangutans at Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary. There are some spectacular islands too if you like that.. Mataking Island is stunning and Pilau Tiga (where the first ‘survivor’ show was filmed) are pretty great visits! Oh and if you dive, Sipadan island is one of the top world dive sites. I couldn’t go as there was a waiting list to get on the island! Definitely on my life to do list!

  2. Hi Veronica, now I know your name 🙂 I admire your courage, mvoing places it’s exciting, but sometimes not as easy, especially at the beginning. I know that since I moved a few times, although not too many. But it’s definitely inspiring and it nurtures my curiosity for new things, new places and new people. It’s so rewarding in the end. And also that is also why I started a blog about traveling and on my experiences. Thanx for stopping by!

  3. Veronica, I have been a sea most of my life too – now I own all my time. I can see that your are a fairly fresh blogger … so welcome in the race. *smile
    I will stay here now.

  4. Sounds as if you are a traveler by nature!! I think that traveling to different places influence us and changes us. You can not travel and return the same person that you were, each travel adventure changes you in a different way! I also believe in traveling to new places and not revisiting the same places!! Looking forward to reading about your travels!!

  5. Hi Veronica! Thanks for stopping by my blog! Wow you have such a cool job! I would love being on the road for 5 weeks at a time but then still having the stability of a home base to comeback to in-between! Bookmarking your site to inhale (yes inhale!) once I end my exams! 🙂

  6. Wow! Fantastic bio, Veronica. Sounds like you’re having a grand time. Can’t wait to go through the archives and read all about your adventures.

  7. Your life is like the party I am waiting for, except I want to study people on my travels as well as actually travel (I study anthropology in university, hence why)
    love the blog
    Lorna xx

  8. Thanks for the recent visit to (and follow of) my blog. It brought me here, to your singular, fascinating chronicle. I look forward to dipping into your archives.

  9. Hi Veronica,

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Living on a boat, having 3 nationalities and identity crisis…sounds cool to me! That’s the life full of adventures!

How does share your favorite spa experience for me sound to you? 🙂

Keep up with the good work. Thanks for your support again!

    Take care,
    S

  10. thank you for stopping by, and oh my goodness, I envy how you get to travel for half of the year! wow. i used to work full time and i only get 5 weeks off a year (and 3/4 of it i should spend visiting my homeland!). now that i’m not working, i can’t travel yet. i guess i’ll travel through the blogs i read, eh? 😀

    • You’re welcome you have a lovely blog! It’s pretty sweet having so much time off but I do have to work offshore for the other half of the year too! So true, travel through reading blogs and photos, I do that a lot :).

  11. Thanks for following my blog “Eyes to Heart.” What a rich life you are living while you unearth your own mystery! Amazing! … Look forward to finding out about your travels. Be well, Dorothy 🙂

    • Thank you for saying that. It seems like you are living a very adventurous and exciting life! I love reading peoples travel tips and stories too..great inspiration for future travels. And you’re so right, the possibilities are endless!

  12. Hi! Thanks for following my blog, I’ll gladly return the favour, it sounds like you lead an interesting traveller’s life! I love to travel too, though I can’t go so often as I live in a fixed abode 😀 Still, I have lived in two countries and have two nationalities and have had the chance to see a fair amount of places. Anyway, I look forward to seeing your posts 🙂

  13. Great attitude. Much like you I prefer to go off and see new places rather than stick to the tried and tested. Very interested to see how the rest of your voyage goes. Super blog and thanks for following my own humble affair. MM

  14. Wow Veronica, your life sounds AMAZING! I would love to have your identity crisis ahah! Thank you for the visit to and subsequent follow of my blog, I look forward to reading your posts too! 🙂

  15. Your adventures are more adrenaline-fueled than mine. I recommend trekking in Nepal and exploring the less-visited parts of southwestern Spain. Thanks for following my blog, and for sharing your adventures!

  16. Hi! Nice to meet you, Veronica – I’m going to read your blog to learn a bit more about you, as I found your profile quite interesting! I love travelling, but since I got married both my husband and I got a bit lazy. Not sure why as we both love travelling. Now that our second daughter is 3 months old, I’m trying to plan more trips for the family, even if it’s once a year. I would love to spend half of the year travelling though.

  17. HI Veronica–thank you for finding my little blog–albeit not nearly as exciting as your own–what a wonderful adventure you are living—thank for you sharing that with the rest of us 🙂 I look forward to discovering more of the world through your eyes, a fellow lover of travel and adventure. I thank you for now following along on my life’s adventure as I look forward to reading more of your adventures—blessings to you–Julie

  18. I hate the question, “Where are you from? Where do you live? Where is home?” I, too, move quite a lot, and my answer to this question is usually long-winded and confusing. While I am American by birth, I am European by choice, wildly in love with England and France, and have visited over half the countries in Europe (and in love with all of them as well). I’ve lived in 4 countries so far and I am moving to my 5th next week (France)! I plan to stay for awhile 🙂 So it’s not just you!

  19. Welcome! Thank you for subscribing to follow my blog. I hope you are encouraged, inspired and enjoy the photos I take of life’s events as seen through the lens of my camera.
    BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!

  20. Hi Veronica, Thanks for following my blog. I’m enjoying your travel vicariously, but may have to boost my travel plans. I”m curious about your work that is 5 weeks away and then home. Have you done most of your travel while working or off? Brad

  21. Thank you so much for reading and following my blog. I am very flattered. I am also exhausted just reading your “About” ~ you lead quite an exotic life! It will be fun following your adventures. Thanks for including me.

  22. This sounds amazing! I’m such a home-body in comparison haha. I just wanted to throw out a thanks for visiting and following my blog. It means a lot to me. I’ll have to be sure to come back and visit because as much as I love to travel I just don’t get to often or at all really, so I may as well live vicariously through you. 🙂 Awesome blog.

  23. So you decided to join the small clan of Uncle Spike followers Veronica…. That makes me a happy blogger now – I really appreciate you making that special mouse click.

Hope you like my upcoming posts and if you get bored one day, maybe you’ll enjoy trawling through some of my older stuff too.

  26. Hi Veronica May, nice to meet you. Wow, what an adventurous spirit you have, and it shines through your blog. I must explore it some more.

  27. Thanks for subscribing to my blog! And you’re definetely not an A4-girl 🙂
Having visited 73 different countries myself, I can fully understand your feelings, but I think what people wants to know is ‘from which country’ you are operating today?
Many of us are ‘hunting countries’ as a side line hobby and it’s always a small thrill to see if a new country falls into the bag? 🙂
At my blog you’ll find more than 2300 ‘full screen photos’ from Norway. Please enjoy!
And ‘yes’, I’m curious as to where you live today! (Would it be Malaysia?) It must be more than 50 years since I visited Penang, but I have been there!

  28. 3 nationalities? (which ones?) Is that possible haha 🙂 By the way, thanks for following my adventures. After going through some of your posts I decided to come along!

  29. What a terrific blog. I love your style. Your sense of adventure. Oh, and thank you for discovering my photography blog http://www.throughharoldslens.com. You gave me the opportunity to discover, explore and follow your blog. Hope we both enjoy our journeys. On behalf of the Through Harold’s Lens Creative Team, my trusty sidekick Mr. SLR Nikon, his brother Mr. Pen Pal and myself, we wish you the best. Harold

  30. I haven’t been able to see much of the world outside the U.S. since I was in the navy 40 years ago, so I’m deliriously envious of your footloose-and-fancy-freeness.

THANKS for subscribing to TheDailyGraff.com. I hope I can bring you a smile (or at least a groan) every weekday.

  32. Well! – what an amazingly lucky young woman you are! (Perhaps the luckiest thing you’ve done so far is to dive the Great Barrier Reef; for our VILE current govt has given permission for spoil to be dumped in the marine park between the GBR and the Queensland Coast. Before long, there may not be a GBR.) Tell me fascinating travel things, yes? – i long to hear them. 😀

  33. Thanks for following my blog!
I love your use of ‘tips’ – I’m starting some freelance writing and am going down this route myself!
Looking forward to new posts, and going through your old ones 🙂

  34. Hey Veronica, I love your adventurous and fun spirit. I’ll be following you, because though, I can’t travel with my injury, I will through you 🙂 So thanks.

    Cheers,
    Lucas

  41. Veronica, Thank you for following my blog. Yours to looks very interesting. Oman is a country, I once had an incredibly interesting conversation about, with an arab who worked for a large oil company. He totally entranced me and bought the beauty and love of his country to life. All the while, we sat on our flight to Dubai and my husband and children slept. His passion for his home, I will never forget!
