A Photo Journey Through Marrakech – Part 2

Another tranquil oasis in the medina. This restaurant was down a quiet alley is a riad called Palais Steppan, with a huge, magical garden atmosphere serving mouth-watering Moroccan cuisine.

This Moroccan dish tastes much better than it looks! Served in a traditional clay dish, the Lamb Tajine is paired wonderfully with large toasted almonds and caramelised onions.

Another must-see is Jardin Majorelle outside the walls of the old city (Medina) – a bright and enchanting botanical garden which was a gift from Yves Saint Laurent to Marrakech.

You won’t find another garden as unique and fascinating as this one!

Most meals in Morocco start with a large basket of warm, fresh, fluffy bread.

This delicious fish-pastry-lentil dish was pretty heavy but hard to resist!

Marrakech
Walking off our lunch, another visit to the souk brought us to a tour of the wonderful bright dyes used for scarves and clothing.

Marrakech
The famous Djemaa el-Fna Square, a chaotic and crowded but fascinating World Heritage site. Come here at night for a rustic dinner in one of the many stalls (stall 32 is the best option for chicken skewers and their famous little sausages). Then prepare to be entertained by story tellers, snake charmers, magicians, stalls selling unusual objects including retainers (?!), jewellery and clothes.

Cafe Arabe Marrakech
A pick-me-up at the popular, contemporary rooftop restaurant called Cafe Arabe serving excellent cocktails (get the cosmo!).

Marrakech hammam
Of course a trip to Morocco isn’t complete without a Hammam experience, where you’ll be stripped of your clothes, sloshed in warm water and ruthlessly scrubbed until you’re as smooth as a babys bottom. You can choose to go to a public house, or for a more intimate, luxurious experience, Les Bains De Marrakech won’t disappoint. The traditional post-oil massage is highly recommended.
La Mamounia Marrakech
An afternoon spent at one of Marrakech’s most decadent and opulent hotels – La Mamounia, with moorish-inspired decor and huge, luscious grounds to admire.

Although far from a traditional dish, the prawn cocktail salad is delicious, set within the garden.

Marrakech is such a wonderful place to explore and photograph. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to explore the Atlas Mountains close by or the rest of the country. I’ll just have to return again in the future and see if it’s as fascinating as Marrakech! xx

    • Thanks for the comment Taphian! The food there is so delicious and quite rich in flavour. A lot of the dishes are a mix of sweet and savoury which is interesting!

  1. Beautiful photographs. They really capture the Moroccan experience. We recently visited Marrakech and visited and dined in the same places you photographed. We also had the privilege of visiting the Atlas Mountains and booked a Desert trip through Desertmajesty.com located in Ourzazate. They will pick you up at any airport and provide transportation, dining and beautiful accommodations at reasonable rates. We enjoyed the services of Said who was our tour guide for 4 days. You photography is excellent and really capture the moment. Pleasant travels.

    • Thanks Billy for your kind words :). Ah that’s lucky you visited Atlas Mountains, I’ve only heard great things but sadly didn’t have time to go hiking there. Sounds like you had a wonderful trip! Happy travels to you too.
